About us

The oldest part of the pub building dates back to the 1400’s, when it was a farmhouse. It first became an alehouse/coaching inn, in the early 1600’s. It would have been a welcome respite for travellers making their way to the Spa town of Buxton from all over the UK. There are many tales and legends associated with the Duke of York, the most famous guest is purported to be the highwayman Dick Turpin.

The pub is said to have two ghosts, one a man, the other a little girl. Further research into the history of the Duke of York is to be undertaken by the landlady, Cathryn,  if we unearth anything interesting it will be posted on the website.

The pub was acquired in the mid 20th century by Stockport based brewery ‘Frederic Robinson’ who currently supply the pub with cask ale and premium lagers, and as a ‘Bitter’ drinker, Derek, ensures that every pint served is no less than perfect.

The Duke of York has traditional English feel, it has a main lounge (locally known as ‘the Top Bar’) and a smaller lounge adjacent to the restaurant, (known as the ‘Bottom bar’). The main lounge has a real fire and offers a warm welcome in the colder months.

We welcome everyone from all walks of life and as a result the atmosphere in the pub is very easy going and friendly.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome, as are muddy boots. We are currently investigating where we could best place a drying rack for boots, so when the weather is a little inclement at least your boots will be warm and dry!
